Keep The Family Car (actually!) Clean
Between school drop-offs, sports practice, and weekend road trips, family cars go through the wringer. From snack crumbs to sticky fingerprints, your car can quickly transform into a mobile mess. For busy parents, keeping the car clean may feel like an impossible task.
But with these five tips, it doesn’t have to be:
1. Keep an emergency clean-up kit in the car
Keep a compact car-cleaning kit in your trunk for quick, convenient touch-ups. Include essentials like a small dustpan and brush, a handheld vacuum, spare old towels, a bag for rubbish and a stain remover pen. Having this kit handy allows you to tackle minor messes before they turn into bigger problems.
2. Clean the floor mats
To clean car floor mats, remove them and shake off loose dirt. For fabric mats, vacuum thoroughly, scrub with a stiff scrubbing brush using soapy water, rinse, and let dry. For rubber mats, hose them down, scrub them with an eco-friendly mild detergent, rinse, and air-dry completely before placing them back.
3. Vacuum on the go
For those inevitable crumb spills and everything in between, it pays to keep a portable cordless vacuum in the car for impromptu clean-ups. Whenever it’s safe to do so, take two to three minutes to vacuum up crumbs and debris before they get ground into the seats or carpet. Opt for a model with a crevice tool for those hard-to-reach spots.
4. Prevent as much mess from the get-go
Mess in the family car is inevitable – but it doesn’t have to get out of control. You can prevent a decent amount of clutter and interior car damage with a few simple hacks.
Cup holders can become a breeding ground for sticky messes. Line them with silicone baking cups, which are easy to remove and clean. When spills happen, simply take out the liner, rinse it under water, and place it back.
Clutter can accumulate quickly when juggling books, toys, and gadgets. Install seat-back car organisers to keep everything neat and accessible. Choose ones with transparent pouches so kids can easily find their belongings without scattering items across the car. Regularly rotate toys and books to keep them engaged and minimise the chances of forgotten clutter.
To keep crumbs and spills at bay, designate a small container or basket as a “snack station.” Include pre-portioned snacks in resealable bags or containers and keep them within arm’s reach for the kids. Place a spill-proof mat or towel under the station to catch stray crumbs.
5. Make clean-up fun for the kids
For older kids, turn car cleaning into a mini family activity. Give your kids small, age-appropriate tasks like wiping down surfaces with damp microfibre cloths or picking up toys and wrappers. Make it a game by setting a timer – whoever collects the most items in two minutes gets a small prize. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also promotes teamwork.
